James' late intervention prevented a home defeat for Chelsea, but the draw extends their winless streak in the league to five games.

Chelsea captain Reece James scored a dramatic 95th-minute free-kick to salvage a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

The late goal earned Chelsea a point but it felt like two points dropped, given their dominance for much of the game.

James' late free-kick rescues point for Chelsea

James, who came on as a second-half substitute in his first league appearance since November due to injury, curled a perfect free-kick past Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers into the far corner of the net.

Chelsea had taken the lead in the first half through Cole Palmer, who scored his 14th league goal of the season. The 22-year-old goal came after a clever pass from Nicolas Jackson, who had skillfully evaded several Bournemouth midfielders. Palmer then cleverly deceived Travers before slotting the ball into the net.

Despite several opportunities to extend their lead in the first half, through Jackson, Palmer, and Enzo Fernandez, Chelsea failed to capitalise.

Just three minutes after the restart, Moises Caicedo conceded a penalty after bringing down Antoine Semenyo. Justin Kluivert converted the spot-kick, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez the wrong way to equalise. Bournemouth then took the lead when Semenyo scored.

James' late intervention prevented a home defeat for Chelsea, but the draw extends their winless streak in the league to five games.

What James said

"I think we had a few clear-cut chances that we should have taken in the first half and put the game to bed," James told TNT Sport.

Chelsea remain in fourth place with 37 points from 21 matches, while Bournemouth sits seventh with 34 points.
