Former Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan recounted the time Lamine Yamal left a match to use the restroom.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan narrated a comical incident from last season, in which Barcelona's youngster Lamine Yamal left a match to use the toilet.

The 34-year-old spent last term at Barcelona but was released back to the Premier League champions. Gundogan had a commendable year for Barcelona, leading the assists chart for the Blaugrana; still, they had to let him go, given their financial situation.

The former Dortmund midfielder, in a conversation on the Ranveer Show, discussed his time at Barcelona and a story about Yamal stood out.

What Gundogan said

During a Champions League clash last season against Porto, Lamine Yamal inexplicably exited the pitch without being substituted out.

Several minutes after his departure, the coaching staff eventually sent in a replacement. After the game, it was revealed that Yamal had to use the toilet.

In Gundogan’s recent interview, he revealed that he did not notice Yamal had left the pitch until he felt the pressure from Porto and that the coaching staff were hoping he would return in time so they would not have to substitute him out, such was the teenager's importance.

“Last season we played against Porto and we were leading 1-0, and everything was going well,” the former Germany international said.

“In the second half, at the 60th minute, we suddenly started to suffer. I felt that the opposing team became much better, as if they had an extra player.

“After 10 minutes I found out that one of our players left the field and went to the bathroom! It was Lamine.

“Lamine was an important player so the technical staff did not want to replace him immediately, so they were waiting for him to return.

“When I found out, I said, ‘Guys, what’s going on? We’re playing with 10 men! Don’t you want to make a substitution?’ In the end, they had to make a substitution because they waited so long for him and he didn’t come back.”
