However, Olanrewaju's side staged a remarkable turnaround in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals to clinch a 3-1 victory, inspired by new signing Jeptha Clinton, who netted a brace.
Speaking about the match, the man who replaced former boss Finidi George, Olanrewaju emphasised the importance of starting the season on a high note and the positive impact it will have on his team's confidence.
"It is important that we start(ed) on a good note, that's why I told the boys - just raise the intensity, the three points is better for the team and our confidence," he said in a video shared by the club on Instagram.
The young coach living his dream as Enyimba’s permanent boss also drew a parallel between the team's performance against Heartland and their upcoming challenges in the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC), where Enyimba will represent Nigeria.
"I told them what is happening (against Heartland) is the future of what we are going to see in Mali (CAFCC)," Olanrewaju revealed.
With this victory, Enyimba have set an impressive tone for their NPFL campaign and their upcoming continental adventure.
Olanrewaju's comments suggest that the team is well-prepared to tackle the demands of both the domestic league and the CAFCC.
"37 games more, this one is done and dusted. On to the next one," the coach concluded, emphasising the need to maintain focus and continue building momentum as the season progresses.
Enyimba's comeback win against the experienced Heartland side, led by Super Eagles legend Emmanuel Amuneke, has undoubtedly boosted the team's confidence and signalled their intent to challenge for domestic and continental honours this season.
