Super Eagles stumble in Abidjan despite dominating possession

Coach Finidi George made three changes to the starting lineup that filed out against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

Raphael Onyedika replaced the injured Fisayo Dele-Bashiru; Terem Moffi started ahead of Paul Onuachu, and Samuel Chukwueze came in for Kelechi Iheanacho.

Nigeria controlled possession in the early stages but struggled with their finishing touches. Their best opportunity came in the 14th minute when Osayi-Samuel shot wide after a good run from Ademola Lookman.

The deadlock was broken in the 27th minute by Onyedika, who curled a shot into the net after a good build-up.

However, Benin responded quickly after a defensive lapse allowed Jodel Dossou to equalize in the 37th minute.

Just before halftime, poor defending from Nigeria gifted Benin the lead as Steve Mounie pounced on a loose ball after a corner kick, putting the home side ahead.

Finidi George made a double substitution at halftime, bringing on Paul Onuachu and Victor Boniface for Moffi and Alex Iwobi.

The Super Eagles pressed for an equalizer but lacked creativity in the final third. Lookman came close with a header, but it wasn't enough. Nigeria made further substitutions but couldn't find a breakthrough.

Nigeria now have a mountain to climb if they are to play at the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and USA.
