This symbolic gesture is part of the league’s Un Rosso alla Violenza campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about gender-based violence.
Serie A’s campaign against violence
The initiative, now in its eighth year, is part of the league’s initiative to use football as a platform to address serious societal issues.
Serie A’s Un Rosso alla Violenza campaign shines a spotlight on the physical and psychological abuse faced by women in Italy.
Disturbing statistics released by the league reveal the gravity of the issue. In 2024 alone, 98 women lost their lives to violence, with 86% of these acts committed by loved ones or family members.
Additionally, over 31.5% of women in Italy have experienced physical or sexual abuse, with more than 28% reluctant to speak out about their experiences.
Football as a force for change
Lega Serie A President Lorenzo Casini noted the importance of the campaign, saying, “Football is not just a sport, it is also a powerful social phenomenon which is capable of reaching millions of fans.
“For this reason, we have to use all its strength to raise awareness and spread fundamental values such as mutual respect, solidarity and non-discrimination.”
Lookman, alongside other players this weekend, will serve as a visual reminder of the ongoing fight against violence towards women and the importance of fostering a culture of respect and support.
Through initiatives like the Un Rosso alla Violenza campaign, Serie A continues to prove that football can be a powerful agent of positive change.
