Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinstry believes his team would have beaten Tusker FC by a bigger margin had they not wasted their numerous chances

Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinstry feels his side should have won by at least three goals during their Football Kenya Federation Premier League match against Tusker FC.

K’Ogalo beat Tusker 1-0 courtesy of Benson Omala’s first-half diving header to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign but missed a number of clear chances with Patrick Sibomana and Austin Odhiambo the main culprits.

While he was glad to secure maximum points, McKinstry conceded his side were not at their brilliant best due to a number of reasons.

“They [Tusker] caused us problems today, the defence held strong and had we been clinical, we could have scored a couple more. I think Patrick Sibomana in the first half probably would have put that in the top corner,” McKinstry told the media after the match.

“Austin [Odhiambo] had a good chance but a little heavy, he was not 100 per cent coming into the game. He was probably 85-80 per cent. He was carrying a little bit of a knock and we decided to go with him and we knew he had an hour in him. Maybe if he was 100 per cent, he would have scored that one.”

The tactician lauded his substitutes for bringing some control, especially in the midfield, where they struggled in the second half having watched his side give away possession easily.

“The guys did very well as a team, I thought all substitutions worked well, they added energy and just tactical solidity at the right time so we are pleased with the result but now we move on because we know Bidco is going to be another difficult opponent next week,” he added.

“Today we were not at our best passing, we conceded possession a little bit, we gave away one or two sloppy passes in the midfield and that was frustrating and that is why we put in a bit of energy in the second half. We ultimately created the best chances in the game.

“If were a little bit more clinical in front of goal, we could have seen a three-goal difference in the game rather than a one-goal difference but you do not get that in every game, some games are tough, Tusker are an incredibly difficult opponent and we expect come the end of the season, they will still be in and around the hunt.”

While they have been winning, Gor have lacked some flair which their coach feels will come with time as long as they keep grinding positive results.

“People think it easy scoring goals but it is not. It is even harder against difficult opponents. In Brian Bwire, you have got one of the top goalkeepers in the league, he is going to make good saves,” the Northern Irishman said.

“They have a really solid defence Tusker who are trained to fight for everything and they do not give up easy chances. Football swings left and right, some games you get the lead and some you grind.”

Gor Mahia, who occupy second place on 15 points, just one behind Posta Rangers, will host Bidco United in their next match on Saturday.
