Roberto De Zerbi could have been named the Red Devils manager ahead of the incoming Ruben Amorim.
In a shocking revelation, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has admitted to rejecting Manchester United’s offer to take charge at Old Trafford, choosing instead to follow his passion in France.
As Manchester United prepare to welcome Ruben Amorim as their new head coach after parting ways with Erik ten Hag, it has been claimed that De Zerbi was approached by the Red Devils over the summer but turned them down to pursue his own path with Ligue 1 club Marseille.
According to a report, before Marseille’s season opener, De Zerbi reportedly made his position crystal clear to his players, using a projector to display the lucrative contract he was offered by United.
Addressing the squad, he was quoted to have said as per L'Equipe, “This is where I could have been, but I put my passion before money. I came to Marseille for the passion.”
The bold statement appears to have struck a chord with his new team, setting the tone for an impressive start to their campaign.
Mason Greenwood flourishes under De Zerbi’s leadership
De Zerbi’s decision has proved fruitful not only for Marseille but also for former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood, who joined the French side under De Zerbi’s wing.
Since his arrival, Greenwood has been in electric form, netting an impressive eight goals in just 11 Ligue 1 appearances.
Having parted ways with Manchester United amid controversy over his actions off the pitch, Greenwood seems to have found renewed confidence and success in Marseille.
De Zerbi’s move to Marseille has stirred up more than a few waves, with United reportedly eyeing him alongside Thomas Tuchel, who also turned down the opportunity.
“Tuchel was very close to considering the role,” Pini Zahavi, the agent representing stars like Christopher Nkunku and Robert Lewandowski, confirmed, but he, too, opted for a different path–instead choosing to accept the role of head coach of the England national team.
