Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has opened up on her decision to reject European clubs in favour of a move to Saudi Arabia.

Plumptre, who has been a key member of Nigeria's Super Falcons over the past 12 months, swapped the familiar shores of England for a new challenge in the Middle East.

The 25-year-old's contract with Leicester City expired over the summer and she made the decision to move to Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

Her decision was heavily scrutinised by Nigerians, with many suggesting she made the move because of huge financial incentives on offer in the Saudi league.

Plumptre, however, insists this is not the case.

In an interview with Nigerian Football, the Leicester-born defender explained her reason for joining Al-Ittihad.

“Now, that’s, not the reason. I did have offers in Europe and also had an offer in America, but it’s not about that again.

My journey in football isn’t about just going to high-profile teams for the sake of going to high-profile teams. I have a very good understanding of myself and what I want out of football,” Plumptre said in the interview.

“I probably had a couple more opportunities to go somewhere else, but I never went, preceding my decision to come here.

"As soon as I had the feeling from speaking to the coach, I knew this is where I wanted to be. We talked about the lifestyle, the culture, and the impact I could make,” she added.

Pumptre made her debut for the Super Falcons in 2022 and has gone on to make 15 caps for her country.
