Bordeaux have been dealt a brutal blow after they were relegated to the National 1 in French football due to financial irregularities.
Former Ligue 1 champions Girondins de Bordeaux are going through it at the moment following their demotion to the third tier in France.
This much Pulse Sports Nigeria can report after the French League's governing body, LFP, confirmed Bordeaux's relegation due to financial problems.
LFP via the football financial body, National Directorate of Management Control, DNCG, confirmed the demotion on Tuesday.
According to RMC Sports via as-ansar.org, Bordeaux, who used to have Super Eagles star Samuel Kalu on their payroll, are in a €40m debt.
The club failed to reassure DNCG of their ability to pay up next season despite presenting the guarantee of re-engagement of the majority shareholder in the amount of €10m, leading to the decision to send them down the trenches.
Bordeaux were relegated last season from the Ligue 1 after they finished bottom of the table in Ligue 1. Bordeaux conceded 91 goals last season, with fewer points (31) than games played (38).
But will have to now navigate their way back to Ligue 1 and elite football from the third division given the latest development.
However, there may still be a glimmer of hope for fans of the club after the owner, Gérard Lopez, stated that they will appear the decision of the DNCG.
"Bordeaux is appealing the DNCG's decision to demote the club to National 1," the club said in a statement.
"It is with dismay that Bordeaux takes note of the decision of the DNCG pronouncing the administrative demotion of the club. The club is obviously immediately appealing this decision."
Despite the "brutal" development, Bordeaux added that they are confident in their ability to continue with the project for 2022/23 campaign.
"This brutal decision - after a hearing of almost two hours which took place in good conditions - deprives the club of continuing to implement the strategy of cleaning up its financial situation and of writing a new page in the history of FC Girondins de Bordeaux."
"The club remains confident in its ability to demonstrate the solidity of its project for the 2022/2023 season. The time of the call will allow him to finalize new solutions to obtain his maintenance in Ligue 2."
