Women's Champions League: Bayelsa Queens make history, enter semi-finals

Nigeria's Bayelsa Queens have made history by reaching their first-ever semi-final in the CAF Women’s Champions League following a 3-0 victory over Wadi Degla.

The Prosperity Girls won their second match of the tournament and needed victory on Sunday to seal passage to the last four.

They reached the semi-final of the competition having amassed six points in three games in Group B, becoming the first Nigerian club to reach the semi-final of the tournament.

In Sunday's final round of group games, Mercy Itimi bagged a brace, while Juliet Sunday scored the other goal for Bayelsa Queens as they defeated their Egyptian opposition.

The Prosperity Girls started the game early, with Sunday scoring in the first ten minutes of the game, and Bayelsa Queens dominating the rest of the half.

The second interval saw the Nigerian side turn on the heat on their opponents, with Itimi making it two for Bayelsa Queens with a close-range finish.

She then went for her second of the game, and Queens' third, scoring with a long-range shot.

Bayelsa Queens to play AS FAR in semis

Following the win, Queens have now progressed to the semi-finals for the first time in the club's history, and as well, are the first Nigerian team to make it to the last four. Rivers Angels failed to make it past the group stage in the inaugural season of the competition.

Coach Domo Okara’s side will now play AS FAR who finished as the winners of Group A, while Group B winners Mamelodi Sundowns will face Tanzania Simba Queens in the other semi-final clash.

Wednesday’s game will be played at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, Rabat.
