Nigerians celebrate Edo Queens and Chidinma for putting the Sun Down on South Africans.

Nigerians are celebrating a remarkable 24 hours as Edo Queens delivered a stunning performance in the CAF Women’s Champions League, defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 to secure their first-ever semifinal spot. 

The victory was particularly sweet as it came just hours before Chidinma Adetchina finished as first runner-up in the Miss Universe 2024 pageant, further elevating national pride.

Edo Queens, representing Nigeria in the tournament, showed their resilience by scoring two late goals to overturn a 1-0 deficit against the South African side. 

After falling behind Melinda Kgadiete's opener in the 24th minute, the Nigerian champions rallied back with a dramatic equaliser from Peace Essien in the 95th minute, followed by Mary Mamudu's winner just six minutes later. 

Edo Queens dethroned champions Sundowns.

This thrilling comeback not only eliminated Sundowns from the competition but also ensured that Edo Queens topped Group B with seven points.

Social media was abuzz with excitement following the match, with fans expressing their joy at both the football team's success and Chidinma's achievement, especially after South Africa's representative stepped down.

Edo Queens will face DR Congo's TP Mazembe in the semifinals, to become the first Nigerian team to reach the final of this prestigious continental competition.
