Deschamps, who led France to win the World Cup as both captain and coach is widely regarded as one of the greatest names in Les Bleus history.
Deschamps set to leave France
According to a report from French publication L’Equipe, Deschamps is set to end his tenure as coach of France’s national team after the 2026 World Cup.
The popular newspaper alleges that Deschamps’ third World Cup as France boss will be his last participation with the national team that he has taken to two World Cup finals.
Deschamps will reportedly announce the decision in an interview alongside France’s first lady Brigitte Macron as part of a charity drive.
Despite suspicions that Deschamp’s exit could be as a result of his recent issues with team captain Kylian Mbappe, L’Equipe believes that the French manager had made his decision to leave after the World Cup a while ago.
Deschamps set to leave France with stellar record
When he eventually decides to announce his departure, Deschamps will be doing so with his head held high after overseeing one of the most successful periods in French football history.
Deschamps led Les Bleus to the 2018 World Cup title after defeating Croatia in the final and almost repeated the feat four years later, but for a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina and the lottery of a penalty shootout.
The former Monaco coach also reached the final of the 2016 European Championships, as well as the semifinal of the 2024 edition.
He also coached France to their maiden UEFA Nations League title in 2021. Deshcamps’ record with France is made even more remarkable considering the state he met the national team after taking over following a disappointing Euro 2012.
