It was a goal-fest weekend across the world but four teams led by League Two side Wrexham delivered an 18-goal thriller across two countries and two divisions.

It was a festival of goals as domestic leagues resumed for serious business as the 2023/2024 season kicked off across Europe.

There were several entertaining clashes across various divisions in the continent but two matches were the obvious standouts.

The quartet of Wrexham, Swindon Town, Borussia Monchengladbach and Ausgburg delivered two memorable matches that ended in an 18-goal thriller.

Wrexham vs Swindon: Fireworks at StoK

The home of newly promoted Wrexham, StoK Cae Ras, witnessed a one-timer as the Red Dragons came back from the dead to escape defeat on Saturday.

Swindon Town, led by the brilliant Jake Young, who was the obvious star of the day after he scored two and assisted two other goals, let slip a three-goal lead following a 10-goal thriller.

Wrexham had Elliot Lee and James Jones to thank as they came from behind to seal a share of the spoils after a thrilling 5-5 draw.

Lee and Jones grabbed a brace each while Swindon’s Dan Kemp was another player who contributed three goals after two goals and an assist.

The visitors started brilliantly and took a 4-1 lead heading into the break before Wrexham dug deep courtesy of a remarkable second half display from the League One champions that was sealed by a dramatic injury-time double by the hosts thanks to goals from Jones and Lee.

Augsburg vs Monchengladbach: Breathless Arena

The other game that was as breathless at the weekend was in the Bundesliga where Augsburg and Monchengladbach played out an eight-goal thriller.

As was the case in England’s League Two, the away team, BMG, started excellently before letting slip a two-goal lead.

Tomas Cvancara was the star of the show at the WWK Arena but his teammate Ko Itakura broke the deadlock when he put the visitors ahead.

Cvancara, who scored two and assisted a third for the BMG, doubled the advantage before the hosts pulled one back just before the half-hour mark.

The Foals restored their two-goal lead in the 37th minute when Nathan N’Goumou made it 3-1 but two goals in four minutes from Augsburg ensured both sides remained inseparable at the break at 3-3.

After the break, Augsburg took the lead for the first time which they held until added time when that man Cvancara denied them all three points from the spot to earn BMG a deserved share of the spoils.

Two matches, two different countries, 18 goals scored, four teams, and zero wins.
