Barcelona boss Xavi has revealed that Lionel Messi's potential return to the club has stirred up excitement among fans
Lionel Messi left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 owing to the Blaugrana's financial issues but with his contract in Paris coming to an end this summer, a return to Camp Nou has been mooted.
Barcelona fans call for Messi's return
Barcelona fans inside the Nou Camp chanted Messi's name loudly during the 10th minute of their goalless encounter with Girona on Monday night.
After the game against Girona, Xavi gave an update on the Messi situation, revealing that negotiations are in process.
"I think the mood of the fans is really positive," Xavi said.
"They evaluate and appreciate the team's effort and the club's effort to be in this privileged position. But we need to achieve this title.
"About Leo, I think it generates great excitement. The fans have been chanting his name a couple of times. The fact that he could come back to the club generates a great deal of excitement."
"But we'll see how that goes. We just need to focus on the next coming games and winning La Liga."

More on Messi
Meanwhile, PSG have reportedly accepted defeat in their plans to extend Messi's contract.
The Argentine World Cup winner is approaching the end of his two-year deal with PSG and despite reports last December that the Argentine superstar was leaning towards renewing, that prospect now seems unlikely.
Barcelona have been vocal about their desire to pursue a sensational reunion with the 35-year-old and club vice-president Rafa Yuste confirmed the club’s interest last week.
"Leo and his family know the affection I have for them,"
Across his two seasons in Paris, Messi has scored 29 goals and contributed 31 assists in 67 appearances.
