Paul Scholes advised Alexander Isak to hold out for a bigger club than Arsenal if he is to leave Newcastle.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes proffered some career advice to Newcastle star Alexander Isak in the latest episode of the Overlap podcast.

The 24-year-old is one of the most coveted striker talents in the market; hence, he has been courted by many top clubs in need of quality in the number 9 position. Arsenal are one such club and have been linked with a big-money move for the Swede in the summer.

What Scholes said

The Manchester United legend is an admirer of Isak’s quality, believing he belongs at one of the biggest clubs in the world, like Real Madrid.

As such, he proffered that a transfer to Arsenal is a sideways move from Newcastle, as he will be moving from a club that will not win the league title to another, in his words, in a similar boat.

"Everyone loves him but I don’t see a possibility of him going to Arsenal," Scholes said. "He needs to go bigger and better. We’re talking about Real Madrid here; Liverpool need a centre-forward.

“I think Arsenal would be an option but I think they would be down the list of options. I don’t mean that in a bad way but he’s at Newcastle, a really good team, a brilliant team, but they’re not going to win league titles; that’s the next stage of his career. I think it would be a risk to go to Arsenal and do the same thing.

“Liverpool have got a much better chance, Man City and Real Madrid the same. I think his sights should be higher than Arsenal. He is a player Man United would be looking at but in the position we’re in now, it’s not going to happen.”

His co-host on the show, Jamie Carragher, pressed, asking if Scholes truly believes Isak deserved better than a move to Arsenal, and the former Manchester United midfielder doubled down.

"Yeah," Scholes reiterated. "I agree he takes Arsenal to another level; he would be brilliant and he could possibly get you over the line. But I just think there’s bigger and better in him.”

Isak finished with 21 Premier League goals last season and is on course to surpass that number this term, with 17 goals in 22 games so far.

Super Eagles legend Sunday Oliseh is another who holds the former Real Sociedad man in high regard, positing that he (Isak) is a superior striker to two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland.
