Nigerian football legend Nwankwo Kano told Super Eagles players they must give the national team double their output for the various club sides.

Super Eagles legend Kanu Nwankwo has admonished Nigerian players who are struggling to replicate their club form for the national team.

The 48-year-old Enyimba chairman is one of the greatest players in Nigerian football history, winning a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics while playing an important part.

While the Super Eagles are enjoying a good period, with multiple players exciting Nigerian fans with their showings, certain players like Victor Boniface have struggled to replicate their club form for the national team. And for players like that? Kanu had strong words.

What Kanu said

“They can’t be doing well in their various clubs and then come to the national team they will not do the same. No,” the former Ajax man told Brila.

“When you come to the national team you give more than what you give to the clubs. You can’t wear that jersey and be slacking. If you’re giving your club 100%, give us 200%.

The level of coaching obtainable at the national team has been consistently tendered as a reason for this disparity in performance level, as the players are being trained by some of the best minds in the game at the club level.

However, this excuse does not fly for the former Arsenal who maintained the onus is on the player to show up regardless of external factors.

“The players need to understand that we may be talking about coaching all the time but they need to do more. From what I’ve seen in recent matches, they are improving, and they’re getting better.”
