The National Sports Commission will take over the functions of the Ministry of Sports.

President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council have decided to abolish the Ministry of Sports Development.

The President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed on Tuesday following the FEC meeting in Abuja.

Onanuga confirmed that the National Sports Commission will assume the responsibilities of the Ministry of Sports.

The statement read, “President Tinubu and Federal Executive Council scrap Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of sports development. There will now be a ministry of regional development to oversee all the regional development commissions, such as Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, and North East Development Commission.

"The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports. The FEC also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. The decisions were taken today at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja."

Shehu Dikko set to become chairman National Sports Commission

Meanwhile, Shehu Dikko, a former League Management Company (LMC) executive, will be appointed as Chairman of the newly established National Sports Commission, which replaces the Ministry of Sports Development.

Recall that the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, which handled youth and sports affairs in Nigeria, was earlier divided into two new ministries by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Federal Ministry of Sports.

This change followed the merger of the former Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) established by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 11, 2016, during a restructuring of government ministries, departments, and agencies.

The new ministry focuses on enterprise development, vocational skills and training, youth advocacy, employment, and education.
