Alex Pereira: Meet the Brazilian ‘Stone Hands’ who defeated Nigerian-born UFC Champion Israel Adesanya three times

Alex Pereira is a Brazilian professional combat sports athlete who has competed in kickboxing and mixed martial arts.

He is the current Light Heavyweight Champion and the previous Middleweight Champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he fights in the Light Heavyweight class.

Pereira is the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in both the middleweight and light heavyweight weight classes, and he is the ninth athlete overall to do so in two different weight classes.

Alex Pereira's early life/age/family

Alex Pereira was born on 7 July 1987 in São Paulo, Brazil and grew up in Favela. He has a younger sister named Aline Pereira who competes for Glory and had her MMA debut in 2022.

Pereira got married and had two sons with his ex-wife but the couple are currently divorced and no longer together. 

The Brazilian left middle school at a young age to work as an assistant to a builder and then as a tyre salesman.

He started training in kickboxing in 2009 to quit his addiction after being inspired by his coworkers.

Alex Pereira’s Kickboxing career

In 2014, Alex Pereira started kickboxing and defeated Sahak Parparyan by majority decision in the final to win his first significant title, the Glory 14 Zagreb Middleweight Contender Tournament in Zagreb.

After that, Pereira focused on his kickboxing career and went on a 4-1 run, losing only to the legendary Artur Kyshenko.

Pereira won his most well-known bouts during this period, thrice defeating Israel Adesanya, the eventual UFC Middleweight Champion, by unanimous decision and by a counter left hook knockout.

He later defeated Simon Marcus by unanimous decision to win the Glory Middleweight title at Glory 46: China.

Middleweight Championship

Pereira continued his career with Glory and went further in his career fighting in several Middleweight Championship.

Following the expiration of his contract with Glory in 2019, Pereira intended to pursue a career in mixed martial arts (MMA). 

However, he ultimately re-signed to stay with Glory with the option to compete in MMA and win titles.

After deciding to remain with Glory, Pereira won four straight successful Glory middleweight title defences against Yousri Belgaroui, Simon Marcus and Jason Wilnis.

After that, he advanced to Glory 68 to challenge Donegi Abena for the vacant Glory Light Heavyweight Championship.

In the third round, Pereira submitted the opponent via knockout, making Glory history's first dual champion.

Heavyweight Championship

Alex Pereira moved from the Middleweight Championship to the Heavyweight Championship after his escapade. 

He fought Artem Vakhitov for the Glory Light Heavyweight title at Glory 77 and won by split decision, becoming the first fighter in history to simultaneously hold two belts at the same time.

Pereira then decided to rematch Artem Vakhitov at Glory 78, Rotterdam in his first title defence. 

By majority vote, he was defeated in the rematch. Many viewed the referee's decision to deduct Pereira one point in round four for repeatedly clinching as contentious.

Alex Pereira’s MMA career

After leaving kickboxing, Pereira competed in mixed martial arts professionally for the first time in 2015 at Jungle Fight 82, where he was submitted.

He carried on at Jungle Fight, where he went on to defeat Marcelo Cruz and Marcus Vinicius Silveira in back-to-back fights via KO and TKO, respectively.

In 2018, Pereira announced that he had agreed to fight Diego Henrique da Silva in the Brazilian version of Dana White's Contender Series. Nevertheless, Glory refused to let Pereira compete, so the fight never happened.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Pereira joined the UFC in 2021, and at UFC 268 he faced Andreas Michailidis in a promotional match.

He was awarded Performance of the Night after winning the bout via technical knockout in the second round.

After that, Pereira competed against Bruno Silva at UFC Fight Night 203. Pereira defeated Silva by unanimous decision after outlasting Silva for the entire three rounds.

At UFC 277 in 2022, Alex Pereira fought Sean Strickland and prevailed by knocking Strickland out in the opening frame.

He was awarded Performance of the Night and the third-place Crypto.com Fan Bonus of the Night award, which came with a $10,000 Bitcoin payment.

UFC Middleweight and Lightweight Championship

Pereira moved higher to the middleweight UFC championship where he faced Nigerian UFC champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 281.

He won the fight via technical knockout in the fifth round which earned him the Performance of the Night award.

However, he lost the rematch to Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship in the final minute of round two.

After his fight with Adesanya, Alex Pereira decided to up his level by moving up to the Lightweight Championship.

He faced former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jan Błachowicz at UFC 291 and won the fight via split decision.

Alex Pereira's net worth in 2024

Alex Pereira is thought to be worth $3 million. He has made a significant amount of money from his UFC battles, where he has established himself as a recognised fighter.

Pereira has become much wealthier as a result of his numerous kickboxing and mixed martial arts championship victories.

Pereira made his largest earnings to date, totalling $1.24 million, in his UFC 287 bout against Israel Adesanya.

In the following bout, Pereira went up in weight to face Jan Blachowicz at UFC 291 at light heavyweight, where his base pay dropped to $210,000.

In his championship match at UFC 296 versus Jiri Prochazka, he was paid an estimated $1,132,000.

Pereira has been able to sign multiple sponsorship contracts as a result of his success as a professional fighter in the UFC.

Alex Pereira's Personal Life

Pereira is of Indigenous descent, descended from the Pataxó tribe. The Tupi language, which is not the Pataxó people's native tongue, is where his nickname "Poatan" (meaning "Stone Hands") originates.

The person who gave him the nickname was Belocqua Wera, the first kickboxing instructor who also assisted Pereira in learning about his native origins.
