The storyline leading up to the build-up had been whether Poirier, who had lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019 and Charles Oliveira in 2021, could win the title on his third try.
He was up against maybe the greatest opponent in the UFC in Makhachev, who came into the battle having won 25 of his 26 career fights as the number one fighter in the weight class.
The bout ended in the fifth round when Makhachev skillfully ankle picked Poirer, spun around, and pounced to get the choke hold.

Sean Strickland beats Paulo Costa
American Sean Strickland defeated Brazilian middleweight Paulo Costa via split decision in the co-main event.
Throughout the five rounds of action, former champion Strickland, 33, applied his usual pressure to Costa, 33, who retreated for the most part of the fight.

After the battle, Strickland demanded a rematch for the title with Dricus du Plessis of South Africa, whom he had lost to for the title the previous year.
It is believed that later in the year, Du Plessis would take face Israel Adesanya in his first championship defense.
