Charles Gacheru has been appointed as the CEO of WRC Safari Rally Kenya, leading the oversight team to enhance the event's growth and global prominence.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has officially announced the appointment of Charles Gacheru as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya.

The announcement, made through a gazette notice dated February 16, 2024, states that Gacheru will hold the CEO position for a three-year term, bringing his vast experience in sports management and public relations to the forefront of Kenya's rallying scene.

In a move that further solidifies the governance structure of the Safari Rally, Namwamba also unveiled the composition of the Oversight Team, which he will chair.

This strategic team includes Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum as vice-chairman and features a blend of representatives from the State Department for Tourism, the Kenya Motorsport Federation (KSMF), and the corporate sector, including KCB Group Chief Executive Paul Russo.

The team is rounded out by notable figures Caroline Gatimu, Safina Khan, Isaac Melly, and Maurice Chetambe, ensuring a diverse mix of expertise and perspectives to guide the event's future direction.

Known as a Public Relations Guru, Gacheru is the driving force behind IMG Kenya, the country's leading sports agency, which has played a pivotal role in organizing major sporting events over the last two decades.

His portfolio includes involvement in Olympic and Commonwealth Games, prestigious golf tournaments such as the Magical Kenya Ladies Open and the Karen Masters, as well as the Safari Sevens Rugby Championship and the football scene through his chairmanship of Tusker FC.

An avid golfer and a former golf columnist for the Business Daily, his deep-rooted passion for sports is expected to bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to the Safari Rally.

Gacheru steps into the role previously held by Phineas Kimathi, who was relieved of his duties due to an overload of responsibilities.

This change comes at a crucial time as the Safari Rally, a blend of thrilling car racing and national tourism promotion, prepares to return to its traditional Easter holiday slot, scheduled for March 28-31, 2024.

The event, renowned for its challenging courses and international appeal, plays a vital role in showcasing Kenya's rich cultural and natural heritage to the world.
