Ferrari's struggles continued as defending champion Verstappen was outclassed in Shanghai by McLaren's resurgence.
McLaren delivered a resounding statement at the Shanghai International Circuit, securing a dominant one-two finish in the Chinese Grand Prix.
Oscar Piastri claimed his maiden victory of the season, leading his team-mate Lando Norris to the chequered flag in an emphatic display of pace and strategy.
Piastri’s triumph did not come easy, as the Australian had to fend off early pressure from Mercedes’ George Russell, who eventually finished third.
)
He also had to fend off his own team-mate. Norris, widely tipped as the title favourite after winning in Melbourne, now faces an intense intra-team battle with Piastri, whose aspirations for the championship are looking increasingly formidable.
Ferrari Clash and Verstappen’s Struggles
)
The opening lap was not short of drama, with the two Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, colliding in the heat of battle.
Hamilton, who finished sixth, immediately reported the contact over the radio, saying as per The Sun: “I’ve been hit by someone.”
)
The damage affected Leclerc’s front wing, reducing his downforce, though he managed to finish in fifth.
Further down the grid, reigning world champion Max Verstappen endured a tough afternoon.
Starting among the frontrunners, the Red Bull driver fell back early and spent much of the race in a battle with the Ferraris.
His race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, urged him on, saying: “Good pace now, Max. Better late than never.”
Verstappen eventually fought past Leclerc to secure fourth place but found himself off the podium for only the second time this season.
Further back, Haas enjoyed a breakthrough performance, with Esteban Ocon finishing seventh and rookie Ollie Bearman climbing from 17th to 10th, marking a memorable race on International Bear Day.
As the season progresses, McLaren’s resurgence continues to shake up the title race.
With Norris and Piastri both delivering stellar performances, the Woking-based team now appears poised to challenge Red Bull’s supremacy in 2025.
