George Russell was stripped of his victory at the Belgian Grand Prix.
In a dramatic development from the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, July 28, George Russell has been disqualified from the race due to his Mercedes car being found underweight.
Despite Russell’s initial victory, a post-race inspection revealed that his car was 1.5 kg below the required minimum weight of 798 kg after a fuel removal, leading to his disqualification.
A Technical Delegate’s Report released after the race stated that, while the car had initially been found to be compliant with the minimum weight of 798kg, 2.8 litres of fuel were then removed.
The report read: “The car was not fully drained according to the draining procedure submitted by the team in their legality documents as TR Article 6.5.2 is fulfilled.“
“The car was weighed again on the FIA inside and outside scales and the weight was 796.5 kg.
“The calibration of the outside and inside scales was confirmed and witnessed by the competitor.“
As this is 1.5 kg below the minimum weight requested in TR Article 4.1, which also has to be respected at all times during the competition, I am referring this matter to the stewards for their consideration.”
After being referred to the stewards, it was confirmed that Russell had been disqualified from the race.
Lewis Hamilton replaces Russell as Belgian GP Winner
As a result of Russell's disqualification, his Mercedes teammate and British GP winner Lewis Hamilton, was promoted from second to first place.
The revised results now see Hamilton as the winner of the Belgian GP, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri moving up to second place and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ascending to third.
This significant change reshuffles the podium positions and alters the race's final outcome.
Disappointed Mercedes accepts steward's decision
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has accepted the stewards' verdict and acknowledged the team's error.
However, Wolff expressed that while the situation is a major setback for George Russell, the team will learn from the incident and move forward.
Despite the disappointment, Mercedes also stated that it remains committed to improving and addressing the regulatory breach.
