The Kenyan driver fell victim to tough roads in Sardegna Island leading to engine damage on Friday.

Kenyan youngster Hamza Anwar was forced to retire from WRC Rally Italia on Friday due to mechanical problems.

Hamza fell victim to extremely rough conditions on the Italian island Sardegna, including narrow, sandy, twisty, and tough roads leading to engine damage.

Pirelli tyre-backed driver Anwar showed tremendous pace in the shakedown and Stage 2 in the WRC Junior category in his Ford Fiesta Rally 3 Evo.

Anwar, making his debut in the upgraded Rally 3 car, was a strong contender for the Rally Italia podium in Junior WRC.

However, the gruelling opening day led to Anwar’s retirement from the rally quite unexpectedly, as his Ford Fiesta came to a halt when his engine inhaled huge amounts of sand.

Diego Dominguez is currently leading the FIA WRC Junior category after edging Roberto Blach in SS4. At the same time, William Creighton, who started the rally carried a 21-point advantage, is third while his French rival Laurent Pellier is fourth.

The upgraded Fiesta debuted in the European Rally Championship earlier this month courtesy of two-time JWRC runner-up Jon Armstrong.

The Northern Irishman drove the car to two class wins in the ERC on Rally Islas Canarias and Rally Poland just over a week ago.

The WRC3 is the Junior World Rally Championship category which is run alongside the main WRC and second-tier WRC2 classes.

Anwar qualified for the five-race WRC drive courtesy of his placing as the best junior in the 2022 African Rally Championship.
