NETBALL 2023 Netball World Cup: Fifth place finish very much alive for She Cranes despite loss to South Africa

She Cranes’ coach Fred Mugerwa had hinted on Wednesday that the game against South Africa at the 2023 Netball World Cup, Uganda, would be up against eight people, the seven players and their fans.

And that is what the She Cranes were treated to at the Cape Town International Convention Centre as Uganda lost 52-50 to the Banyana Banyana to finish fourth in their group.

A full house that cheered every pass that the hosts and roared every time their leading shooter Ine-Marí Venter scored a goal

But before the game, something unusual happened; for the first time in this competition, centre Margret Baagala missed a She Cranes game.

She had been weak for the past three days, the reason she was subbed for the first time in the win against Wales.

Much as she was named on the bench, she was not part of the team’s warm-up session or on the court as coach Fred Mugerwa went with just 11 players.

And her presence was very much visible as She Cranes midfield struggled, every time Uganda dropped centre passes, South Africa capitalised.

They led 16-11 by the first quarter; Mary Nuba was 11/11 at this point, with Achola contributing five asissts Irene Eyaru and Sarah Nakiyunga added two each.

As Uganda trailed 22-12 in the second quarter, Megerwa went for his customary substitutions Nakiyunga and Stellah Nafuka with Shadia Nassanga and Haniisha Muhameed for keeper Stellah Nanfuka.

Ine-Marí Venter was 24/24 while Nichole Taljaard added 11 asissts, Nuba was 17/17 for Uganda as the She Cranes trailed 33-19.

Uganda tried to close the gap going into the last quarter, they trailed 41-36, Nuba only scored twice in this quarter and she was 26/26, Nassaga added 10 points and 12 asissts, and centre Achola also helped herself to 12 asissts.

Uganda got themselves back into the game and levelled matters 42-42, and it was a pound for pound affair, 49-48 South Africa led.

The pressure on both sides was very visible, but the hosts were calmer as they won 52-50, Nuba with a game high of 29 points.

Nassanga scored 21 points and 13 asissts; Eyaru also contributed 13, while Achola had 19 to her name. The loss meant that Uganda finished fourth while South Africa settled for third.

England and Australia are through to the semis and will play world champions New Zealand and group F winners Jamaica, respectively.
