As the 2023 National Netball Super League came to an end, Prisons were crowned champions after defeating Kampala Capital City Authority in a winner-takes-it-all clash.
KCCA fell 46-41 in a closely contested affair at the TLC Court in Kamwokya on Saturday.
Going into the match, the two teams were separated by a point, with KCCA leading the table with 37 points from 20 games and Prisons with 36 points.
Both needed a win to guarantee victory for the league title.
Towering shooter Christine Namulumba Kago inspired the offence as she took her overall tally to an impressive 791 goals in 20 games, making her the season’s top goal scorer.
KCCA had a slim lead in the first quarter leading 10-11; then, the information changed hands to 20-21 at the end of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, KCCA trailed by two, with Prisons leading 34-32.
With all to play for in the final quarter, Prisons overcame a resilient KCCA to win 46-41.
Namulumba attributes the victory to teamwork: “We have been working as a team.
If one makes a mistake on the court, we move on without animosity. Instead, we lift each other to win.”
Coach Imelda Nyogesa Prisons admits that the road to the title was tough, but they learnt from their disappointments.
“It has been hard for Prisons,” Nyogesa told Pulse Sports before adding.
“We came here intending to win the trophy. When we lost two games in the first round, we had to return to the drawing board and rectify our mistakes.”
Prions, who have now won four league titles after the 2009, 2017 and 2018 victories, will focus on the East Africa Netball Championship this May in Nairobi, Kenya.
