Uganda is steadily growing into a global netball powerhouse if the women's senior netball team's recent performances in international competitions are anything to go by. However, more needs to be heard about men's netball in Uganda and the national team in particular.

For starters, Africa Netball granted the Uganda Netball Federation the hosting rights of the 2023 Africa Netball Cup, which will also debut in the Africa Men's Netball Cup.

Men's netball took root in 2008 when a youthful side participated in the U-21 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

The team, coached by Vincent Kiwanuka, would then have its first international tournament in 2021 following an invitation by the South Africa Netball body.

Uganda came close to walking away as the overall winners, only to fall to the hosts South Africa after registering a total of five wins.

Uganda registered victories over neighbours Kenya and several top South African clubs; other participants included Pakistan and Zimbabwe.

Uganda Netball Federation boss Babirye Sarah Kityo notes that the World Netball is promoting men's netball to shade off the image of the sport as a single-gender sport.

"This tournament (2023 Africa Netball Cup) will show how other countries have already embraced and developed men's netball."

She added: "I implore schools, district authorities, to also include netball for boys and men just as they do for volleyball and football".

"Wherever there's netball for ladies, please also promote netball for men because this national team cannot be here forever".

The men's national team, known as The Rock, will hope to make a sounding statement at their maiden appearance at the continental event.
