Holger Rune was ruthless against Miami Open champion Daniil Medvedev, claiming famous victory in their quarterfinal match at Monte Carlo Masters.
Holger Rune wasted no time at displacing Daniil Medvedev, defeating him in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4 to reach his first Monte Carlo semifinal.
It is his first career Masters 1000 semifinal on clay and his second Masters semifinal. The 19-year-old's victory over Medvedev made him attain significant feats as a teenager clay, which speaks volumes of his massive talent on clay.
According to Opta Ace, here are three feats after his success over the Miami Open champion.
- He is the first Dane to make the Monte Carlo semifinal in the Open Era, and his 14th match wins at ATP Masters 1000 level. Only nine teenagers have more from their first 25 Masters matches.
- Rune is the third teenager to make the semifinal of the Monte Carlo Masters since the introduction of the Masters format in 1990. The last teenager to make the semifinal at the event was Rafael Nadal in 2006.
- Finally, the youngster has become the first teenager to claim multiple top-five wins in ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals since 1990. Rune's other quarterfinal victory came against fellow teenager Carlos Alcaraz (Paris 2022).
Rune's post-match interview on defeating Medvedev
“It wasn’t easy. It’s always tough to play Daniil. It was my first time playing him in a real match, but we practiced many times. I have huge respect for everything he has done. It wasn’t easy to stop him, but I’m happy I managed to do it,” the teenager said.
Rune also spoke on facing fellow youngster Jannik Sinner in the semifinal and his chances of advancing to the final.
“It is going to be a great match no matter what. It’s two young players, up and coming. They are already at the top, so it’s not really up-and-coming. Lorenzo had a great win yesterday & Jannik is in form as well. It’s going to be tough.”
