He also revealed that the Local Organising Committee is done with the preparations and they are just waiting for the D-day to come.

Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba is hopeful that Kenya will earn more than what she received last year by hosting this year’s edition of the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally.

The CS disclosed that during last year’s edition, Kenya was granted approximately Ksh63 billion and he is optimistic that the amount will be increased in this year’s edition.

“When you look at last year’s statistics, Kenya earned approximately Ksh 63 billion and we hope that we’ll earn even more as we prepare to host this year’s event,” Namwamba said.

During last year’s event, Finland’s youngster Kalle Rovanpera took top honours as Welsh driver Elfyn Evans settled for second place. Japan’s Takamoto Katsuta sealed the podium. The trio was driving the Toyota GR Yaris Rally 1.

Speaking about the progress of the preparations, Namwamba revealed that everything is set for the event set to take place from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 June in Naivasha, Nakuru County.

He revealed that the Local Organising Committee is done with the preparations and they are just waiting for the D-day to come.

He added that the international drivers have started jetting in their vehicles ahead of one of the most lucrative events in the country.

“Actually, everything is ready. International drivers have started jetting in their cars and if you head to the command center in Naivasha, you’ll realise that we are on the right course. We are ready to start the event next week on Thursday,” he said.

The CS added that this year’s edition is a special one in the country since Kenya will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Safari Rally since the first event was held in 1953.
