Cristian Garin produced one of the highlights during the third round of the Indian Wells by defeating No. 3 seed Casper Ruud 6-2, 7-6(2) to reach the round of 16.
Alexander Zverev survived a tough battle against Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5, 1-6, 7-5, while Daniil Medvedev won his sixteenth consecutive match by beating Ilya Ivashka in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. They will face each other in the round of 16.
Another upset was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina taking reaching the fourth round for the first time after taking out No. 13 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, and Alejandro Tabilo getting a very good 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Jordan Thompson.
2021 champion Cameron Norrie regrouped from a set and 1-4 down to conquer Taro Daniel 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-2 in 2 hours and 45 minutes. It's Norrie's seventh consecutive win, and now 20-3 in 2023, he faces Rublev in the round of 16.
Francis Tiafoe booked his round of 16 spot, defeating Jason Kubler 6-3, 6-2, same as Andrey Rublev, with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ugo Humbert.
Women's category
In one of the most dramatic comeback wins and a battle of former Grand Slam champions, Petra Kvitova overcame Jelena Ostapenko 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 to make the round of 16 and face Jessica Pegula.
And Pegula regrouped from 1-3 in the third set to beat Anastasia Potapova 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, while in an all-teen battle Coco Gauff got the better of Linda Noskova 6-4, 6-3 to advance.
Another highlight was Maria Sakkari for the second consecutive match, winning from a set down. This time, the Greek battled past Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance into the round of 16.
Barbora Krejcikova got the better of Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-2, to reach the fourth round. It was her eighth consecutive win and plays a rematch with Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the quarterfinals.
A good win for Karolina Pliskova, who took out Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 7-5. Sakkari and Pliskova will face each other in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
