Edo dominates National U-18 Swimming Championship

The event was held to choose the top athletes who will represent Nigeria at the upcoming sub-continental championship of the West Africa and Central Africa zones in Accra, Ghana, in August.

The team of swimmers from the Edo State Aquatic Association won the National U-18 Swimming Championship in Asaba, Delta State.

The winning Edo swimmers won the three-day Asaba National U-18 Championship, with a hefty haul of 11 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals.

In the three-day National Junior Swimming Competition, which featured more than 50 athletes from ten states and four clubs, the host state, Delta, placed second with six gold medals, while the Jimi Osinnowo club from the state of Lagos took third with four gold medals.

Agnes John, who competed in the 50, 100, and 200meter backstroke events, and Peremoboere Kima Kiagha, who competed in the 50, 200, and 200meter breaststroke events for Team Edo, were two of the six swimmers whose outstanding efforts brought honor to the state of Edo.

Before the men finished off the rout on the last day, Team Edo's women earned six gold medals on the first day of the competition in the 200-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke, 50- and 100-meter breaststroke, and 200-meter freestyle.

The event was held to choose the top athletes who will represent Nigeria at the upcoming sub-continental championship of the West Africa and Central Africa zones in Accra, Ghana, in August.

The Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Nse-Obong Samuel, expressed hope that the athletes will perform well in the upcoming sub-continental competition after praising their swimming competition's performances.
