The 2023 Bankers’ Gala concluded on Sunday, showcasing thrilling indoor games at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium, following the previous Sunday’s outdoor games held at Kyambogo University Sports Grounds.
Steered by Captain Louis Agwa from the treasury department, I&M Bank's basketball squad delivered a formidable performance.
The team overcame FINCA in the quarter-finals and later dominated Stanbic Bank in the semi-finals.
The intense finale saw them battling a formidable Post Bank team, attracting significant attention as the two top-tier teams vied for supremacy.
For I&M Bank, this was their chance to ascend from being the underdogs to the champions of this annual basketball competition.
Their point guard, Gerard Ayiko, was in stellar form, establishing himself as possibly the event’s standout player.
His exceptional skills and the backcourt's precision rendered I&M Bank almost unbeatable.
Ultimately, their opponents couldn't keep up with their vigor, and I&M Bank clinched the gold, leading by four points.
“We owe our triumph first to God and to our unwavering teamwork. Our synergy allowed us to move cohesively on the court," expressed Agwa before adding.
"Our gratitude goes to the I&M Bank management for their trust and their presence, cheering us on. This victory is dedicated to our valued customers; we stand by you."
Entering the competition as underdogs, I&M Bank's victory was a testament to their determination.
Agwa believes this underdog status fueled their ambition and is confident about defending their title next year.
I&M Bank's top executives, including Acting Managing Director Sam Ntulume, CFO Timothy Musiime, and Head of Strategy Eva Nassazi, not only graced the event but also actively participated in some indoor games.
Apart from their basketball accolades, I&M Bank also made its mark in other competitions. They secured medals in the CEO walk challenge, thanks to Godfrey Odoch’s performance, and excelled in bottle balancing and the quiz challenge.
The bank also showcased commendable skills in badminton, volleyball, table tennis, darts, and chess, advancing to the quarter-finals in each.
