Wheelchair basketball championship is crucial for the players
The National Championship, which will take place in Ogun State capital, Abeokuta Sports Stadium, from June 22 through June 25, 2023, will also be used to choose competitors for the African Para Games in Ghana this year.
Pulse Sports reports that the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN) has prepared its athletes to participate in wheelchair basketball (male and female), tennis, and amputee athletics.
Sources within the Federal Ministry of Sports Development disclosed that a lack of funds is responsible for the country's inability to be at the Games despite the readiness and preparation of the athletes and federations for the Games.
The para-athletes had tabled their request to participate in the Games before the newly appointed minister during his inspection of facilities at the National Stadium, Surulere Thursday during which he assured them that he would look into the matter to assure that they would participate.
"But as it is now, with a day to the opening ceremony of the Games scheduled for tomorrow, nothing is on the ground that indicates the country will participate. And the para-athletes are still in the country while other African countries have started arriving in Ghana for the Games, the source, who pleaded anonymity, said.

Some of the Para athletes who have trained and prepared for the Games have expressed sadness over this ugly development.
