The government has detailed the scope of renovation work that is required to lift Kasarani Stadium to international standards.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has provided an update on the scope of work needed at Kasarani Stadium which is currently closed for renovation.
The facility is one of the venues earmarked to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations following Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania’s successful bid and the renovation work is projected to end in December 2024.
According to Namwamba, the refurbishment will see the pitch changed while the dressing rooms and other amenities will get a new look.

Relief for Harambee Stars as AFCON 2025 qualifiers likely to be hosted on home soil after all
Nyayo Stadium could be available for use by September, which now means Harambee Stars won't have to host their home matches abroad again, having played Burundi and Ivory Coast in Malawi.
“Kasarani Stadium. Fully stripped and refurbishing works well on track, including overhaul of the playing surface, ICT capabilities, VIP lounges, changing rooms, abulitions and other amenities,” Namwamba posted on social media.
Kasarani, just Nyayo stadium, are the two biggest sporting facilities in the country but are not able to host international matches after failing a number of inspection tests.
That has seen government close them for renovation with the move forcing Harambee Stars to play their two home World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast in Malawi this month.

STADIA Sports Kenya reveal why CAF banned Kasarani, Nyayo as renovation tender calls are floated
The two facilities in Nairobi alongside Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino are set for a major facelift in readiness for the 2027 tournament if EAC Pamoja Bid is successful.
“When they did their inspection in 2021, they flagged certain areas which need to fulfill international standards. For Kasarani, there is a minimum requirement for floodlight, there should be a lux amount of illumination and the lights have to be overhead,” a source from Sports Kenya told Pulse Sports of what is needed to improve Kasarani.
“There must be seats in the entire stadium and the VIP area also need to have immovable seats. There must be a public address system, venue control, media centre, changing rooms need improving, the dugout, drainage, mixed zone and there should be medical facilities that will attend to not only players but spectators and VIPs.”
Government is in a rush against time to ensure the facility is ready with Harambee Stars hoping to use the stadium in 2025 during the next home World Cup qualifiers.
