RUGBY Kayange to directly oversee flopping Kenya 7s as KRU aligns operations

Legendary rugby player Humphrey Kayange has been appointed as the Director of the men’s rugby Sevens national team popularly known as Shujaa.

During the Kenya Rugby Union elections held on Wednesday, March 29, Kayange was voted in as the Director alongside Harriet Okach, John Kilonzo, Moses Mukabane, Ochieng Ahaya and Leslie Mwangale.

Kayange was part of the Kenyan squad at the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens reaching the semi-final. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2021. He announced his retirement from the Kenyan rugby sevens team in October 2016. With his vast experience in the field, Kayange will be keen to implement what he learned as a player to serve the team.

During an interview after he had been voted in, Kayange had expressed his excitement about being given the responsibility and promised to ensure the players’ welfare comes first at all costs.

“I’m very excited to be voted in. Rugby is a sport that has given me so much and I really wanted to serve. I look forward to the work that is ahead. My biggest role will be to ensure that our board is player focused,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ahaya has been appointed the Director of development, Okach will be responsible for commercial services, Mukabane will handle the men’s rugby national 15’s team (Simbas), Kilonzo will be in charge of women’s rugby while Mwangale will handle the league and fixtures category.
