Kabras on Saturday, March 11, secured a 19-9 win over Kenya Commercial Bank.
Kabras Sugar RFC coach Carlos Katywa is not resting on his laurels as he shifts focus to the Enterprise Cup set to commence on March 18.
With Kabras being the defending champions in the same, Katywa noted that there is no time to waste as they look for a squad to compete at the Enterprise Cup and win.
“On Monday we shall be back to the drawing board looking for a squad for the Enterprise Cup. We want to give youth an opportunity to play. We have to win this,” he said.
He noted that they had a poor start in the sevens circuit but they will be keen to look into that.
Katywa on Saturday, March 11, led Kabras to successfully defend their Kenya Cup title against Kenya Commercial Bank in an entertaining match played at the Kakamega Showground.
The highly contested match saw them win 19-9 and Katywa was over the moon owing to the victory. He lauded the team for controlling the game.
“I’m breathless…this was a game that exceeded its expectations. It was a matter of who used the bench properly and who could lead the game accordingly. My boys were in a class of their own. Our defense was on top notch. The boys deserve this win. They played for the Kakamega community,” Katywa said.
He added that a few tactics and mind games worked in their favour as KCB could not predict their next moves. Katywa noted that their a lot of transitions happening in their squad and they will be seeking to recruit more quality players.
“We are on top now and everyone is going to come for us. Other teams are starting to equip themselves but we promise to keep on fighting. We shall try and become better next season as we seek to defend our title,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mwamba RFC ladies’ captain Stacey Atieno has said the first half break talk was very crucial in their 21-20 win over Impala Roans as they sought to defend their Kenya Cup title.
The first half ended with Impala leading 17-3 and Atieno noted that she told the girls to switch up their game if they had to lift the trophy back to back. She added that in the first half, their structures were not working well for them and that was their major undoing.
“After the first half, I told the ladies that it’s up to us to choose if we are to retain the cup or let it go. They had their 40 minutes in the first half and we were now going back to utilise our 40 minutes. Our forwards had decided to put up a good fight and that psyched us up.
Our win did not come as luck, it was confidence and hard work that we invested in the second half. I am happy…I don’t feel any pressure. A win is our win,” she said.
She also lauded the team for their team work to ensure the cup is retained.
