Wele respectively lost 2-3 and 0-3 to her Ugandan and Ethiopian opponents.

Fast rising Tennis star Lisa Wele is blaming inexperience for her dismal show at the ongoing African Club Championships. The event which started on Monday, May 1 at Kasarani will draw its curtains on Wednesday, May 3.

Wele, who is considered among the most promising tennis players in Kenya started off her campaign on a low where she lost 2-3 to Uganda. In her match against Ethiopia, she lost 0-3.

However, Wele has lamented that her opponents had a better advantage over her since they have experience.

“Those ladies are very experienced and they have high IQ levels…they know how to play with our minds. They know how to pick up the game,” she said.

She observed that she had so many notable mistakes during the matches and she has a lot to do before getting to the top level.

“I have so many mistakes that need to be addressed. I need to improve on my footwork because most players are good in that,” she said.

Going forward, Wele believes Kenya has a long way to go if they have to make a mark in the continent and the world at large.

She revealed that they need to normalize investing more time in training and attending international events to learn from their experienced opponents.

She highlighted that lacking a consistent training routine remains one of their significant undoings.

“At the moment, I think we still have a long way to go. We need to do more training and work on every aspect of the sport. We have encountered many experienced players who have given us tough competition.

We have had so many challenges during training because finding training partners is hard for us,” she said.

After the African Clubs Championship, focus will immediately shift to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Cup scheduled for Thursday, May 4 to Saturday, May 6.
