Daniil Medvedev won his 20th title in 20 different tournaments, overcoming Holger Rune for his first clay title in Rome.
Daniil Medvedev has won his first career title on clay after twenty-six appearances, defeating Holger Rune 7-5, 7-5 to win the Rome Masters tournament.
It is his 20th career title - all in 20 different tournaments, his sixth Masters 1000 title playing in nine finals, and his fifth title of the year.
A significant boost for the Russian who slipped out of the ATP Top 10 after the Australian Open, but he has been incredible since then, being in almost all major finals of the year.
Medvedev is 6-3 against top-10 opponents in 2023 - the player with the most wins against top-10 this year. The Italian Open Champion has already won twice the number of matches against such opponents compared to 2022 (3).
The 27-year-old is the third player to win the Miami title and Rome title in the same season this century after Novak Djokovic (2011, 2014, and 2015) and Andre Agassi (2002).
In his post-match interview after his victory, Medvedev said he was happy to show everyone he can play on clay.
"I always wanna believe in myself, but I really didn't believe I would win a Masters on clay. I always waited to play on clay, but I felt amazing since my first practice this week. I'm very happy to show myself and everybody that I can play well on clay."
And Rune had this to say on his defeat. “I want to say congrats to Daniil. You played amazing this season and winning your first title on clay as well. It’s been an amazing week for me here in Rome. I love the Italian vibe. The food, the people. Everything here is amazing,” he said.
Medvedev will be the world number two and second seed entering Roland Garros. Carlos Alcaraz with the No.1 spot, and No.3 seed Novak Djokovic, can end up in the same half of the draw. All three will fight for the No.1 spot in Paris.
