Mwamba Ladies RFC head coach Joseph Baabu has disclosed that plans are underway to form a junior ladies’ side.

The tactician noted that one of the motivations behind starting up a young side is to ensure continuity. He added that at the moment, they do not have transfer funds so he thought it would be wise to start a young side instead of struggling to look for players from outside.

Apart from our main team, we don’t have any other small teams and this has made us struggle with depth and most of the time I’m not even able to field a full 15s squad. Also, in case of an injury, I get concerned because it’s difficult to fill the gaps.

We also have the issue of transfer funds and at the moment, we don’t have sponsors. You can even see the kits that our players have. I thought it would be wise for me to start with an age-grade system and have players who can play for our team.

This also helps in saving the cost which we don’t really have and we can use some of the money we have for other things,” he told Sports Eye.

Baabu added that he wants to develop a culture in his players and the only way he can achieve that is through training them from a young age.

He believes that having an academy where he trains players is one of the keys to success in the sport.

When we build this culture…we shall take Mwamba a long way. I already have some players but I want to categorise the teams into three groups.

The first group will include players from eight years and below, nine years and 14 years, and then 14 years to 18 years,” he added.
