Many people aired their views asking why only most football teams were awarded cash tokens and not other sports disciplines from all over the country.

Sports CS  Ababu Namwamba hosted the inaugural Cabinet Secretary’s Champions reception at the Safari Park Hotel on Friday night and concerns have been raised on why some other legends were left out of the ceremony.

Many people aired their views asking why only most football teams were awarded cash tokens and not other sports disciplines from all over the country.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia were awarded Ksh 10 million (Ksh 5 million for winning the league and Ksh 5 million paid towards their debt). Mozzart Bet Cup winners Kakamega Homeboyz got Ksh 5 million.

The Women Premier League winners Vihiga Queens and Cup winners Ulinzi Starlets were awarded Ksh 5 million. For winning the National Super League (NSL), Shabana FC and second-placed Murang'a Seal who gained promotion to the top-tier league, FKF Division One and Two winners were also on the list. All FKFPL teams and NSL teams are getting Ksh 500,000 each.

AFC Leopards who finished eighth in the league also benefitted from a Ksh 5 million reward that also goes towards clearing their debts.

A host of legends in different sports ranging from athletics, motorsports, tennis, and boxing were also awarded. World Champions Roll Ball was the only other team sport recognized in the event.

However, CS Namwamba has cleared the air and revealed that they have a plan for other disciplines going forward since it was only the first time they were hosting the event.

Each club in the National Super League and Premier League has gotten something…besides the players, we have people in the technical benches and who have really suffered.

This is just the beginning…we should be able to expand this to other disciplines and ecosystems,” he said, during an interview after the event.

The CS added the full-term solution to the struggling sports disciplines in the country is for them to get the corporate to help them.

But I will continue insisting that the sustainable solution moving forward is corporate sponsorship. We are working around the clock to secure sponsorship for all sports disciplines in the country,” Namwamba said.
