The last time a Kenyan hockey team was at the Summer Olympics was in 1988 and the Sports CS feels a return to those days is possible
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts Ababu Namwamba has challenged the Kenya Hockey Union to bring back the sport's lost glory.
Speaking during the final of the 2023 Vaisakhi Cup at the Sikh Union Club Dashmesh Stadium, the CS noted that Kenya has all it takes to revive the standards of the sport in the country, recalling the days Kenya was among the powerhouses in hockey.

HOCKEY City Park Hockey Stadium set for temporary closure
This is not the first time the stadium is being closed as it was also temporarily closed in 2013.
“Once upon a time, Kenya sat at the international high table of hockey. I remember in 1971, Kenya was actually number four in the world in hockey. Kenya has participated in the Olympics before. Kenya has been right up there with the very best in the world,” CS Namwamba said.
He added the government and other stakeholders will join hands to lift the standards of hockey in the country as they seek to make a mark in the international scene.

HOCKEY Vaisakhi Cup returns to Kenya after several decades with Malaysian and British teams
The event will begin on Saturday, April 15, and will run until next Saturday, April 22.
He noted that the last time a team was sent to the Olympics was in 1988 and they have to ensure the glory days come back.
“There is absolutely no reason why we can’t go back there…in fact, we must go back there,” the CS said.

Meanwhile, Western Jaguars play Kenya Police in the final of the tournament after eliminating their foreign opponents. Two teams from the United Kingdom and three from Malaysia had graced the tournament.
