National Youths Games: Delta State set to defend Title

The Games are scheduled to take place between September 20 and 30 in Asaba, Delta State.

The chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, has revealed that the state is ready to defend its title at the seventh edition of the National Youth Games.

Pulse Sports reports that Delta State won the sixth edition at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, with 60 gold, 26 silver, and 28 bronze medals to make it six wins in the six National Youth Games since 2013 when Abuja hosted the first edition.

Okowa has a strong belief that athletes who will be selected to represent the state after the close camp will excel at the festival.

He said, "Just like our slogan says in Team Delta, if it doesn't fit, force it, which literally means our athletes are groomed with the never giving up mind set and attitude, at the 6th edition, Team Delta got 60 gold medals. This time around, we want them to do better.

"We have to prove to others that Delta is and will continue to be the home of Sports in Nigeria. Thank God our Governor, His Excellency, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is so passionate about sports and with the More agenda, He has been giving us all the support we needed, and I am sure Team Delta will retain not just the title but will improve our performance and dominance in some of those Sports that eluded us at the last edition,” he said.

"We are good to go," said the Director - General, Christ Anaziah, While giving an assessment of the level of preparedness of Team Delta.

"Our Athletes are already in close camp, at various locations within the state, we have given them preparation that will make them excel at the games and hopefully nothing short of good outing is our expectations," he concluded.

The Seventh edition of the Youth Games are scheduled to take place between September 20 and 30 in Asaba, Delta State.
