From being called a 'lucky loser' to qualifying for the third round of a Grand Slam tournament, Micheal Mmoh's 'Life is Crazy'.
The 2023 Australian Open has been one with many upsets, and the latest is from Micheal Mmoh defeating Olympic Champion and 12th seed, Alexander Zverev 6-7(1) 6-4 6-3 6-2 for the biggest win of his career to advance into his first ever third round at a Grand Slam.
The American with Nigerian roots was on his way to the airport on Monday, when he was called in as a 'lucky loser'.
He lost to Vukic in the qualifying rounds and only got to play in the second round because homeboy Nick Krygios pulled out due to injury.
In an on-court interview after the match, Mmoh said "I had my bags packed and my flight booked back to the US."
Then he wrote on the camera after his victory. "Life is Crazy."
With this win, Mmoh has now surpassed his father - Tony's best finish at the Australian Open. His father is a former Nigerian professional Tennis player who reached the second round of the Australian Open and the US Open and climbed as high as 105th in the ATP ranking back in the 80s.
The 107th seed will enjoy every moment of today and prepare for his third round match in the coming days.
Alexei Popyrin stuns Taylor Fritz in second round match
No one saw this coming, but Alexei Popyrin played his best match of his career in a stunning victory over Taylor Fritz 6-7(4) 7-6(2) 6-4 6-7(6) 6-2 to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
Going into the match, Fritz was favourite for an easy win, not just because he the ninth seed in the world ahead of Popyrin's rank of No. 113, but majorly due to the fact that the American men's players have been on fire at the tournament, and he is their highest ranked player.
Though Fritz had ankle problems late in the third set, it doesn't take away Popyrin's exceptional play in front of his home crowd.
