Segun Durojaye won thePyramid Club Scrabble Tourney title in Lagos.
One of the known gems of the Nigerian scrabble circuit Segun Durojaye over the weekend re-enacted the style that earned him some followers as he snatched the Pyramid Scrabble Club Mega Celebration Tournament title in style.
Durojaye like a Phoenix flew back into reckoning in the final round of the 10 to upstaged early front runners John Ayedun (who dropped more points in his final game) and Hakeem Olaribigbe with a decent cumulative advantage point of +862.
In the end, Durojaye widely regarded as the "Okocha of Nigeria Scrabble' outsmarted Olaribigbe who he met in the final round on Table 1 with the word "BROOSES" to claim victory in the highly competitive tournament.
His guile on the board over the years had earned him the appellation with the famed former Super Eagles midfielder Austin Jay-Jay Okocha known for his mavericks in the national football team.
"Scrabble is a very funny game. When you least expect the tiles to favour you it doesn't. It doesn't recognize hard work but grace. Hakeem Olaribigbe kept Table 1 under wraps but I just got lucky and took my chances. "
"I haven't had time to practice like before due to work and the activities around plans for my Mom's burial in a few days. So the little space I have for Scrabble got me my winning word BROOSES which I just knew about on the eve of this event. "
Olaribigbe (8-2, +540) and Victor Ewarah (8-2, +476) would finish second and third with 8 wins and 2 defeats as the top three players ended with the same record but different cumulative points.
A cash prize of 100, 000 naira was presented to the winner while others received various cash prizes.
President at the closing event was the Lagos State Scrabble and Monopoly Association (LASSMA) Chairman Engr. Dipo Akanbi who is also a member of the Club.
The Pyramid Scrabble Club which is one of the foremost clubs in Lagos has received commendation for adding another event to the circuit.
