Over 5000 students storm Lagos for African University Games

The 10-day event will see over 5000 students showcase their skills in 17 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, tennis, and more.

Ahead of the 11th edition of the Federation of Africa University Sports Games, nothing less than 5000 student-athletes have stormed Lagos for the event.

Lagos State University and the University of Lagos will host the event starting on Friday, September 20. It will mark the first joint hosting by two universities.

The event, scheduled from September 20 to 29, is expected to attract over 5000 students from about 100 universities.

Nigeria previously hosted the third edition of the FASU Games in 2004 at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi.

Since its inception, ten FASU editions have taken place. Ghana in 1974, Kenya in 1978, Nigeria in 2004, South Africa in 2006, Uganda in 2008, Namibia in 2012, Kenya in 2014, South Africa in 2016, Ethiopia in 2018, and Kenya in 2022.

Meanwhile, the host institutions have stated their readiness to host the Games in grand style.

“Nigeria is not just hosting the Games; it is about to make history. These Games will be jointly hosted by two of Nigeria’s leading universities, the University of Lagos and the Lagos State University, a first-time ever co-hosting of the Games since its inception in 1974," Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola echoed.

The 10-day event will showcase 17 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, swimming, taekwondo, judo, karate, cricket, hockey, chess, scrabble, and boxing (demonstration sport).
