Onyinyechi Mark has set three new world records this year and won the first gold medal for Nigeria at the Paralympics.
Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark has made history by shattering the Paralympic record in the women's 61kg category. Lifting an astounding 145kg, Mark surpassed the previous record held by her compatriot, Lucy Ejike.
With one lift remaining, Mark's performance has all but secured Nigeria's first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Her closest competitor is attempting 138kg on her final lift, while Mark aims to further extend her record with a final attempt of 147kg.
Onyinyechi Mark set a new record
Onyinyechi Mark has cemented her status as a dominant force in women's up to 61kg Para-Powerlifting. She had broken the world record twice, lifting 146kg and 147kg respectively.
Mark's performance at the Paralympic Games showcased her strength and determination as she broke two world records within 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, Eniola Bolaji was the first African para-athlete to win a medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
Bolaji beat Ukrainian Oksana Kozyna in two straight sets (21-9, 21-9) in Para Badminton to clinch Bronze
Esther Nworgu also won Silver in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting event.
