Experts in African media have revealed the media opportunities that media practitioners should delve into.

The distinguished speakers guided the audience through the theme ‘Sports Media in Africa: Exploring the Continent’s Untapped Opportunities and Potentials’ at the Innovation Pavilion Landmark Event Center in Lagos.

Biola Kazeem, the CEO of Sports Derivatives, revealed that this is the best time for media to leverage new technology.

He said, “This is the best time to participate in sports and media with the emergence of technology. Some social media platforms can be tapped into; all we needed was to pick up the skills required to excel.”

On her part, a sports business and media expert, Janine Anthony, encouraged young media personnel to learn with patience every day. “Take more time and be more patient with learning daily, willingness to collaborate and be open-minded will give you the desired results,” she said.

Tap from other Sports and don’t Focus on football alone – Maxwell

Meanwhile, Maxwell Kalu, the founder of the African Warriors Fighting Championship, admonished media practitioners to tell stories about other sports.

The combat sports expert added that the country is losing more talent because it is focusing only on football.

According to Maxwell, “We need to diversify from football to other sports, we need to start tapping into sports because we are losing talents because we only focus on football. There are opportunities in local sports as well as international markets diversified into other others and we should go beyond the big sports.”

Create a Niche for yourself – Brila FM CEO

Corroborating Maxwell, Debbie Larry-Izamoje, the COO, of Brila FM, said media practitioners should create a niche for themselves and have a unique selling point (USP).

She said, “Have a plan and stick to the plans, define your USP before you can argue with the big boys. Explore so many other sports and make a niche out of them, feel them engage you, and focus on it.

She added that engagement of fans is necessary, “Make about the fans either you won’t lose them,” she said.

However, Biola Kazeem called on the government to focus more development of Sports Facilities for Private investment into sports.
