Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has called on the junior golfers to put forth their best efforts in flying the Kenyan flag high at the All Africa Team Championship (AAJTC) to be held from April 15 to 21 at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa in Uganda.

The CS flagged off the seven-member team yesterday, April 13, led by captain Junaid Manji. Others include Lee Kimathi, Krish Shah, Mikael Kihara, Chanelle Wangari, Belinda Wanjiru, and Audrey Gachora.

They were all competitively selected from a 20-man shortlist of 12 boys and the top eight girls from the Junior Golf Foundation Order of Merit.

"I am proud to handover over the flag to the team through their captains. The future of sports is in the youth and the AAJTC event presents a good opportunity for Kenyan juniors to showcase their skills at the highest level in Africa,” the CS said.

He added that the Ministry was looking forward to delivering a carrier to the young people and turning the sport of golf into a livelihood.

“We are happy to support our juniors and look forward to partnering with JGF to grow junior golf in the country. We wish our golfers success in this championship & assure them that the government supports them fully and all Kenyans will be cheering them on,” he said.

Meanwhile, JGF president Regina Gachora thanked the CS for the support, assuring him of good performance from the tournament.

On his part, the Kenya Golf Union Secretary General Philip Ochola, who is also the Chair of Africa Golf Confederation Technical Tournaments Director, said they are working with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development and the Sports Academy of Kenya to incorporate golf in schools and identify talent at an early stage.

He added that the union was looking forward to delivering a carrier to the young people and turning the sport of golf into a livelihood.

The AAJTC is the premier junior golf event in Africa’s Golf Schedule and attracts participation from the elite junior golfers in Africa and serves as the African Qualifier for the prestigious Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan.
