The Uganda Badminton Federation is not about to get a breather if its current schedule is anything to go by.
As Africa Badminton Championships in Johannesburg, South Africa, conclude, the badminton federation now shifts its focus toward the upcoming Uganda International Badminton Championships set to run from 22nd to 27th February at the MTN Arena Lugogo.
Ahead of the championships, the UBF received a financial boost of Ugx 5M from Bank of Baroda, a development the federation CEO Simon Mugabi admits is timely.
"We are grateful for the financial boost from Bank of Baroda, and they have always supported us, so this package will go a long way in helping us sort prize money and other logistics."
The tournament, a world-ranking event under the Paris 2024 Olympic qualification, will see the winner earn 4,000 points and USD 15,000 in prize money.
Over 49 countries, including Uganda, are expected to participate. Mugabi adds that the team is well prepared, with Uganda having registered 90 players.
"This is an internationally recognized tournament, so team Uganda is prepared, we have registered 90 players, so I am sure we shall deliver."
Top badminton-playing countries expected to arrive in Uganda before the tournament starts Monday include Malaysia, Singapore, England and Canada.
State minister for sports Peter Ogwang is expected to be the chief guest.
