Humphries, a newcomer to the World Cup, and Smith partnered effectively to deliver a commanding display, leading England to their first triumph since 2016.

Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis were previously the only English players to win the World Cup trophy since its inception in 2010. Nonetheless, Humphries and Smith secured their place in history by convincingly defeating Austria 10-6.

England's road to success started with an impressive 8-3 triumph over France on Saturday. Their winning streak continued to the finals day, as they achieved consecutive 8-4 victories against Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Humphries was on fire against Northern Ireland, hitting consecutive 130 and 140 checkouts to seal the win. The English duo continued their flawless display, shutting down their old rivals Scotland.

This led to a championship showdown against Austria, the 2021 runners-up. Humphries shone as the top player, averaging a remarkable 113 in the final and successfully converting four checkouts of over 100 points.

"This is the biggest buzz I’ve felt since the World Championship. We really wanted this. We really believed we could win it, and when you’ve got the world number one and world number three playing together, it’s a bit of a cheat code.

"After that first game on Saturday, we just clicked. We knew if we played our best we could win this title, and I just hope we get to come back to defend this title as champions next year, " reflected Humphries, who continued his dream run in 2024.

The World Champion, Smith, also hit a vital double-double 18 finish, sparking a sequence of high-scoring finishes that placed England in command.
