World University Games: Team Nigeria in the last 5 editions

A chronicle of Team Nigeria’s journey during their previous appearance at the FISU World University Games

Team Nigeria will begin its journey on Friday, July 28th at the 31st edition of the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Pulse Sports had earlier reported that Team Nigeria had arrived in Chengdu, China, for the FISU World University Games. The Games will run from July 28 to August 8 in Chengdu, China.

Team Nigeria for World University Games

The first batch of athletes representing Nigeria left Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Tuesday and landed at the Tianfu International Airport in Chengdu on Wednesday.

Nigeria is expected to compete for honors in seven games, including Track and Field, Swimming, Badminton, Judo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, and Tennis.

Nigeria's first appearance at the World University Games was in 1970, and since then, they have appeared 15 times, winning a total of 70 medals in the process.

At the last edition in Napoli, Italy, Nigeria didn't participate but are now in Chengdu this year. Team Nigeria’sperformance in the last five years is as described below:

Taipei 2017

Team Nigeria’s last appearance at the FISU World University Games was in Taipei in 2017.

The team did not perform extremely well as they won a total of just four medals; two Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze.

Gwangju 2015

During the 29th edition of the Games held in Gwangju, South Korea, Nigeria only came back with a paltry three medals.

The Green White Green team bagged one Gold medal, one Silver medal, and one Bronze medal at the bi-annual sporting events.

Kazan 2013

Kazan, Russia played host to the 2013 World University Games and Nigeria was one of the participants at the Games.

The team did fairly well - winning six medals: two Gold, one Silver, and three Bronze.

Shenzen 2011

Shenzen was the host city of the 26th FISU World University Games, and Nigeria bagged just three medals; one Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze.

At the 25th edition in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2009, Nigeria was absent from the Games.

Bangkok 2007

In the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, in 2007, Team Nigeria won three medals: one Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze.

What should we expect in Chengdu?

In the last five editions of the World University Games that Nigeria has participated in, the highest number of medals the country won in a single edition stands at six.
